Operator's Log: Sidewall Blowout on I-35W near Alliance Town Center — F-150 Spare Mount + Replacement

Real-job field report — Tuesday-afternoon sidewall failure on I-35W northbound near the Alliance / Heritage Trace exit. 2021 Ford F-150 XLT, 265/60R20 Michelin, shoulder change on the spare then sourced replacement to the driver's hotel.

The Call: 2:18 PM, Tuesday, I-35W Northbound at Heritage Trace

Out-of-state driver in a 2021 Ford F-150 XLT hit a chunk of retread debris on I-35W just past the Heritage Trace exit. Right rear tire went from 34 PSI to flat in under a mile — sidewall took the impact, not the tread. Driver made it to the right shoulder before the wheel hit the rim.

Called dispatch at 2:18 PM. Truck was staged near Loop 820 finishing a lockout in Ridglea. Quoted $65 spare mount + $19 dispatch, plus optional sourced replacement pricing if the spare didn't hold up.

The Drive: Loop 820 to Heritage Trace — 24 minutes

Loop 820 west to I-35W north, exited at Heritage Trace, backtracked one mile up the shoulder with hazards. Arrival 2:42 PM — 24 minutes.

    The Job: 18 minutes on-site

2021 Ford F-150 XLT, 265/60R20 Michelin Defender LTX on the failed corner. Full-size matching spare stored under the bed on the factory winch.

    1. Cones deployed 40 feet back, hazards + amber roof bar on.
    2. Driver + passenger walked behind the guardrail, off the shoulder pavement.
    3. Factory winch drop, spare pulled, jacked on the frame lift point (never the axle on late-model F-150s — that's an easy way to damage the diff cover).
    4. Sidewall inspection on the failed tire confirmed non-repairable: 2-inch impact break, cord visible, bulge on the outer shoulder. Photo documented for the customer.
    5. Spare torqued to 150 ft-lb in cross pattern, TPMS reset on the driver's dash cluster.

On-site time: 18 minutes. Truck back on the road at 3:00 PM.

    The Replacement Sourcing (Same Day)

Driver was checked into a hotel off Presidio Vista for a work trip. Spare was rated to 65 mph and he had 3 more days of driving planned, so we sourced a replacement:

    • 265/60R20 Michelin Defender LTX M/S, load rating 121T
    • Sourced from a local Fort Worth distributor: $189 delivered
    • Mount + balance + install at the hotel parking lot next morning: $65 labor
    • Total replacement: $254 (tire + labor), payable in one transaction.

He kept the spare in the bed as a legitimate full-size spare for the rest of the trip.

Why This Call Type Spikes on I-35W Alliance

Heavy freight traffic from Alliance Airport / AllianceTexas, DFW inland-port logistics, and constant construction on I-35W drop retread debris and metal from load-shift incidents daily. Sidewall failures on the I-35W Alliance corridor are our #2 tire call volume in Tarrant County, behind only nail-in-tread punctures in Cultural District parking lots.
