Operator's Log: Missing Wheel Lock Key on a Jeep Cherokee at Domain Northside Garage (Austin)

The Call: 4:07 PM, Wednesday, Domain Northside Garage Level 3

Customer called at 4:07 PM from the Domain Northside parking garage. Left work, walked out to her 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited, found the right rear at 8 PSI and dropping — clean roofing screw in the tread near the shoulder. Went to grab the spare and realized the wheel-lock key was in her husband's truck across town.

Jeep's OEM factory wheel lock (Mopar part 6104742AA) sat on the outboard lug of each wheel. Without the key, no spare could go on.

Called dispatch. Quoted $75 per lock removal + $65 spare mount + $19 dispatch, confirmed we carry the spline extractor set that fits Mopar OEM locks, and dispatched.

The Drive: MoPac Staging to Domain Northside — 22 minutes

Truck was staged off MoPac at Braker after a battery replacement in the Arboretum. Route was Braker → Domain Boulevard → Domain Northside garage entry. Arrival 4:29 PM — 22 minutes.

    The Job: 21 minutes on-site

2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited, factory 18-inch alloy wheels, single OEM Mopar wheel lock on each of the four wheels.

    1. Confirmed spline pattern on the exposed lock crown — 6-spline Mopar factory pattern, matched Set A extractor #17mm.
    2. Extractor hammered onto the lock crown (2 taps with a dead-blow — you need the extractor teeth fully seated before you turn).
    3. Breaker bar counter-clockwise, lock backed out clean in one turn. No wheel damage, no hub damage.
    4. Repeated for the other three wheels (customer wanted all four removed so this doesn't happen again). Total lock-removal time: 9 minutes for all four.
    5. Flat tire pulled, spare (full-size matching alloy stored under the cargo floor) mounted with standard lug nuts — customer opted to replace the locks with regular lugs.
    6. Torqued to 100 ft-lb in cross pattern.

On-site time: 21 minutes. Back on the road at 4:50 PM.

Why This Call Type Spikes in Austin

Austin's tech-hub office parks — the Domain, Downtown, East Austin creative district, and the Arboretum — are wheel-lock hot spots because owners keep the key in the glovebox of a second vehicle (or lose it during a dealer service visit) and don't realize until a flat happens. Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse, and Honda Pilot factory locks account for 70%+ of our missing-key calls in Austin.

McGard aftermarket sets (installed by dealer prep or the owner) are the other 30% — same removal procedure, different spline pattern.

Pricing on This Job — Line Items

    • Wheel-lock removal, 4 wheels @ $75 each: $300
    • Spare mount labor: $65
    • Dispatch fee: $19
    • Total: $384 — every line item quoted before work started.

Customer opted for all four removed to eliminate future risk. Single-wheel-only jobs (just the flat) run $75 + $65 + $19 = $159.
