What can be repaired — and what cannot

A tire repair is only safe within a narrow set of conditions, and being straight about that is more useful than selling you a patch that will not hold. Punctures in the tread area, up to about a quarter inch, in a tire that has not been driven on while flat, can be repaired. Anything in the shoulder or sidewall, any cut longer than a quarter inch, and any tire that has been run flat long enough to scuff the inner liner, cannot be — the structure is already compromised even though the tire looks fine from outside.

In Denver most of the repairable punctures we see are construction screws and roofing nails picked up around RiNo, Baker, and the Central Park build-outs. Most of the non-repairable damage is pothole bruising from the spring freeze-thaw on I-25, Colfax, and Federal Boulevard.

When a repair is not safe we say so and mount your spare, or bring a replacement tire in your size. Either way the wheel is torqued to specification and the pressure set for altitude before we leave.
